#9 Tartans Win Inaugural Battleground Invitational With 4-2 Victory over #7 Johns Hopkins
(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon men's tennis team, ranked ninth nationally, won the inaugural Battleground Invitational hosted by the University of Mary Washington on Saturday after topping Johns Hopkins University, ranked seventh nationally, 4-2. On Friday the Tartans beat Mary Washington 4-2 and the Washington University in St. Louis 4-3. The Tartans are now 13-2 in dual action this season.
Inside the Results
- The Tartans won the team doubles point with wins at one and two doubles. The Tartans first spot was won 6-3 by sophomores Alex Feies and Brendan Hendrata, while senior Akshay Joshi and freshman Ian Miller won a 9-7 tiebreaker, 7-6 (7), at second doubles to secure the team point.
- Carnegie Mellon went ahead 3-0 after winning at four and one singles. Miller won 6-4, 6-0 at four while Feies won 7-6 (1), 6-0 at the top spot.
- Johns Hopkins then pulled the score to 3-2 with wins at two and three singles.
- Junior Daniel Kong cementing the Tartans victory with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 win at five singles.
- Sophomore Braden Chavez then was leading at sixth singles 4-6, 6-3, 5-1, when play was stopped.
Up Next:
The Tartans will travel to Case Western Reserve University on Saturday April 18th.
