#9 Tartans Advance to Championship of Battleground Invitational With wins over #15 Mary Washington and #8 WashU
(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon men's tennis team, ranked ninth nationally, opened play at the inaugural Battleground Invitational hosted by the University of Mary Washington on Friday. The Tartans first downed the host Eagles 4-2 before topping University Athletic Association foe #8 Washington University in St. Louis 4-3 to advance to the finals on Saturday afternoon. The Tartans are now 12-2 in dual action this season.
Inside the Results against Mary Washington
- The Tartans won the team doubles point with wins at two and three doubles. The Tartans tandem of senior Akshay Joshi and freshman Ian Miller won second doubles, 6-3 while the third spot was won 7-5 by sophomores Alex Feies and Takeshi Koey.
- Mary Washington then knotted the score at 1-all with a win at three singles.
- Graduate student Diogo Tinoco put the Tartans on top with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the second spot before the Eagles claimed a 2-1 advantage with a win at five singles.
- Feies then won first singles 6-3, 6-2 right before Koey sealed the win playing in the fourth spot with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Inside the Results against WashU
- The Bears won the team doubles point with wins at one and three doubles.
- Carnegie Mellon then took a 2-1 advantage after Koey was victorious at number three by the scores of 6-4, 6-2 and Feies won 7-6 (6), 6-3 at the top spot.
- WashU then won second and four singles to reclaim the lead at 3-2.
- Junior Daniel Kong won 6-4, 6-4 at six singles to even the score at 3-all.
- The final point came down to five singles where Miller won the first set 6-2 before dropping set two 6-4. In the third set, the freshman then clinched the match with a 6-2 win,
