Tartans Open Season at Denison Invitational

(GRANVILLE, Oh.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team opened its season at the Denison Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The Tartans competed against Denison University, Case Western Reserve University, Kenyon College, and DePauw University.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans won five doubles matches.
  • On Saturday, doubles pair freshman Ian Miller and sophomore Will Secord defeated DePauw University team 6-1.
  • On Sunday, the Tartans won four doubles matches against DePauw and Kenyon. Senior Akshay Joshi and graduate student Diogo Tinoco won two matches with scores of 6-0 and 6-3. Sophomore Braden Chavez and freshman Michael Larionov won a match 6-1. Graduate student Chaitanya Irkar and sophomore Brendan Hendrata won a match 6-3.
  • The Tartans also won 10 singles matches over the weekend.
  • Chavez was the Tartan's only player to win two singles matches. He defeated a Depauw player 6-1, 6-0 and a Kenyon player 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8.
  • Larionov, Miller, Joshi, and junior Daniel Kong each won a singles match in only two games.
  • Tinoco, Hendrata, Secord, and junior Theodore Gershon also secured one singles win each for the Tartans.

Up Next

The Tartans will host the CMU Invite on Friday, September 26 through Sunday, September 28. Competition will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
