Tartans Begin Play ITA Regionals, Three Athletes Advance
(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon women's tennis team traveled to the University of Mary Washington for the first two days of ITA Regionals on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28. The Tartans were victorious in three singles and one doubles match in the semifinals round.
Doubles Play
- Doubles pair of freshman Ika Kanumuri and sophomore Shelly Zinchenko moved their way through four rounds to earn a spot in semifinals. After a bye in round 64, they won 8-2 in round 32, 8-1 round 16, and 8-4 in quarterfinals.
- The duo of sophomore Ancele Dolensek and senior Divya Venkatarama made it through three matches before falling 8-4 in quarterfinals.
- Senior Anna Chow and freshman Jane Wong also advanced to quarterfinals before losing 8-4 as well.
Singles Play
- Zinchenko, the top seed, won 6-3, 6-4 in quarterfinals to earn a place in semifinals.
- Venkatarama and Kanumuri went head-to-head in the quarterfinals after each advancing three rounds. Kanumuri was victorious 6-4, 6-1, slotting her for the semifinals on Monday against Zinchenko.
- Wong won her quarterfinals match 7-5, 6-4 to put her in semifinals.
- Sophomore Victoria Gazda moved through two rounds before bowing out in the round of 16.
