#12 Tartans Start Dual Season with Two Wins
(ADA, Ohio) - The 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened the spring season with a pair of victories on the road Saturday, February 7. The Tartans started the day with a 6-1 win against host Ohio Northern University and closed the day with a 6-1 victory against 38th-ranked Hope College.
Inside the Results Against Ohio Northern
- The Tartans earned the doubles points and also swept the matches. The number one pair of freshman Ika Kanumuri and sophomore Kotistha Modak winning 6-4 to get things started. The number three pair of sophomores Victoria Gazda and Shelly Zinchenko then won 6-1.
- In singles play, positions two through six won in straight sets for the Tartans with Kanumuri finishing first at third singles with a 6-1, 6-1 score to make it 2-0.
- Gazda was the next to finish by a 6-0, 6-2 score at number five singles just ahead of senior Divya Venkatarama at fourth singles who won 6-2, 6-1 for match point.
Inside the Results Against Hope
- Once again the Tartans won all three doubles matches to start with a 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore Shelly Zinchenko paired with sophomore Rachel Li to win 6-1 at third doubles while Venkatarama and sophomore Ancele Dolensek paired in the second position to win 6-1.
- The Tartans won five singles matches with Zinchenko, Gazda, senior Manuela Van Cotthem and Dolensek winning in straight sets.
- Zinchenko won at first singles, 6-4, 6-3, while Gazda earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth singles.
- VanCotthem won 6-3, 6-1 at sixth singles and Dolensek was victorious at third singles, 6-0, 7-6 (10-8).
