#8 Tartans Set to Compete for the NCAA Championship
(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team has been selected to compete for the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship and will travel to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, for the first, second and third rounds of competition from Friday, May 8 through Sunday, May 10. The appearance in the postseason event will be the eighth for the program and third under head coach Mike Belmonte, as the Tartans return to the championship field for the first time since reaching the third round in 2021.
The eighth-ranked Tartans will begin play against 43rd-ranked Washington and Lee Unviersity on Saturday, May 9 at Swarthmore College. Seventh-ranked Swarthmore will play the winner of Allegheny College and Penn State Behrend on Saturday with the two second-round winners to play on Sunday, May 10.
Sunday's winners will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanoga, Tennessee, from May 19-22.
The Tartans placed fourth in the University Athletic Assocation (UAA) and have wins against 11 nationally-ranked opponents. Sophomore Alex Feies has a singles record of 21-6, including a 15-3 mark at the number one position. He's already secured his second All-America honor by winning his first-round match at the ITA Cup in October. Sophomore Takeshi Koey has 13 wins while graduate student transfer Diogo Tinoco has 11 wins. Freshman Ian Miller has played fourth through sixth in singles and has a 15-9 overall mark. Junior Raghav Jangbahadur has a 7-3 record at third singles and was an All-American as a freshman.
