Tartans Play Midweek UAA Contest at Emory

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Atlanta, Georgia to play the third-ranked Eagles of Emory University. The Tartans dropped a 94-70 contest and moved to 11-13 overall and 3-10 in UAA play while the Eagles are now 21-3, 11-2.

How it Happened

  • With Carnegie Mellon trailing 10-7 at the 14:56 mark of the first half, the Tartans used an 11-2 run and led 18-12 following a triple by senior Buckley DeJardin with 11:50 to play in the first half.
  • Three minutes later, Emory took back the lead at 21-20 after Mario Awasum connected on a pair of free throws.
  • After a step back jumper by sophomore Evan Mirazimi, the Eagles scored eight straight points and took a 29-22 lead.
  • The home team continued its run as it grew to 21-5 over the final eight minutes of the half and took a 42-27 lead into the break.
  • Emory built a 20-point lead at 53-33 three minutes into the second half.
  • The Tartans then scored 14 straight points and cut the deficit to 53-47 with the clock showing 12:42 to play.
  • The home team responded with an 11-2 run over the next 2:46 and pushed its lead back to double digits at 64-49.
  • The Eagles continued to control the contest and went on for the 94-70 victory.

  • The Tartans shot 36.5& (27-74) from the field, 33.3% (11-33) from behind the arc, and 71.4% (5-7) from the free throw line.
  • DeJardin led the offense with 25 points, followed by Mirazimi as he tied a career-high with 16 points.
  • Mirazimi led the defense with 10 rebounds to record the double-double, followed by graduate student Nolan Casey with nine.
  • Graduate student Sam Adusei and DeJardin both collected four assists, as it tied a career-high for DeJardin.

  • The Eagles shot 51.4% (26-70) from the field, 39.4% (13-33) from behind the arc, and 100% (9-9) from the free throw line.
  • Jair Knight led the offense with 21 points.

Game Notes

  • Casey has 499 career rebounds and needs one to become the 21st Tartan in program history to reach 500 for his career.
  • Mirazimi now has three career double-doubles all coming this season.
