OT Thriller Falls to #25 NYU; DeJardin Records 1,000th Point

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team took 25th-ranked New York University to overtime on Sunday, February 8, before falling by two, 70-68. The Tartans are now 10-9 overall and 2-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Violets move to 15-5 and 6-3.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans held a three-point lead, 28-25, at the end of the first half after shooting 42.3% from the field and holding NYU to 33.3%.
  • Graduate student Nikola Dimitrijevic led all players with 11 points at the break, as the Tartans scored 18 points in the paint.
  • NYU opened the game with a three-pointer and later led by eight points, 19-11, with 7:14 to play.
  • An 11-3 run by the Tartans drew them even on a bucket in the paint by senior Buckley DeJardin and the senior, who entered the game eight points shy of 1,000, converted a fast break layup and free throw on the next possession to put the Tartans ahead for the first time in the game.
  • A back-and-forth second half saw no lead larger than three points until NYU took a five-point lead with 10:13 to play on a jumper in the paint by Henry Bickford, his only points of the game.
  • Seven minutes later, graduate student Sam Adusei put the Tartans up 55-51 with a triple that ended a 12-3 run.
  • NYU later erased a five-point deficit and led by two with 33 seconds to play.
  • A three-point play by Dimitrijevic gave the Tartans the lead but NYU would equalize with a free throw with three seconds left to send the game to overtime.
  • There were five lead changes and two ties in overtime with DeJardin draining a three-pointer to go ahead 68-67 with 24 ticks left on the clock.
  • A driving layup by Darren Rubin on NYU's next possession gave them the lead they would hold onto after Rubin's steal led to a pair of free throws at the end in which he made one.

  • Dimitrijevic led the team with 18 points and six rebounds.
  • Adusei finished with 15 points and three assists.
  • DeJardin and sophomore Evan Mirazimi each scored 12 points with DeJardin recording his 1,000th career point during overtime.
  • Mirazimi also had eight rebounds.

Violet Stats

  • Rubin led four players in double figures with 18 points. He also had seven assists.
  • Carnegie Johnson finished with 12 points while Bryan Moussako had 11 and Darius Gakwasi had 10 points.
  • Quinn Clark led the team with eight rebounds.
