Tartans Drop UAA Contest at Rochester

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Rochester, New York to play the Yellowjackets of the University of Rochester on Friday in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The Tartans dropped a 96-82 contest and are now 10-5 overall and 2-2 in UAA play. The Yellowjackets move to 8-7, 1-3.

How it Happened

  • At the 16:28 mark of the first half Rochester led 13-5 after scoring 10 straight points.
  • The Tartans cut the deficit to 13-10 a minute later, as graduate student Nikola Dimitrijevic completed the traditional three-point play following a dunk off a pass by junior Isaac Higgs.
  • Back-to-back triple by the Yellowjackets gave the home team 21-13 advantage with 11 minutes on the clock in the first frame.
  • Carnegie Mellon then scored seven straight points, including five points from sophomore Evan Mirazimi, which pulled the Tartans to within a point at 21-20.
  • With seven minutes on the clock in the first half, Rochester used a 15-4 scamper over a five-minute stretch and led 43-29.
  • In the closing minute of the half, graduate student Sam Adusei connected on a pair of three-point baskets sandwich with a jumper by Rochester's Tomiwa Adetosoye which left the score 48-38 at the break.
  • Dimitrijevic opened the second half with a layup to make the score 48-40, but unfortunately that is as close as the Tartans could cut into the lead.
  • Rochester maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 18 before going on for the 96-82 victory.

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans shot 45.9% from the field (28-61) and 37.0% from behind the arc (10-27).
  • Dimitrijevic led the Tartans with 20 points and nine rebounds.
  • Higgs and Mirazimi finished with 15 points while Andusei scored 14 points in the setback.

Yellowjacket Stats

  • The Yellowjackets shot 55.2% from the field (32-58) and 50.0% from behind the arc (13-26).
  • Adetosoye scored 19 points, handed out nine assists, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded four steals to lead Rochester.
  • Justin Odibo ended with 17 points, Corvin Oprea and Jordan Owusu each scored 13 points while Theo Murray scored 12 points.

Up Next

  • Due to the winter storm forecasted Saturday and Sunday, the Tartans contest at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, January 25 has been postponed. Carnegie Mellon will return to the hardwood on Friday, January 30 with a 5:30 p.m. tip at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
