Tartans Edged by Saint Vincent in Final Seconds

(LATROBE, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Latrobe, Pennsylvania to play the Bearcats of Saint Vincent College on Wednesday afternoon. A layup by Terek Crosby with 2.3 seconds left in the contest gave the Bearcats a 78-76 victory. The loss moves the Tartans record to 7-3 overall while the Bearcats improve to 7-4.

How it Happened

  • A 12-5 run over the first four minutes of the game gave the Tartans the early lead with sophomore Evan Mirazimi scoring six of the Cardinal and Gray points.
  • A three-point bucket by Sain Vincent's Jaden Gales with 11:32 to play pulled the home team to within two points at 18-16.
  • Carnegie Mellon then used a 9-2 run over the next two minutes and took a 27-18 lead.
  • Following a triple by junior Isaac Higgs that made the score 30-21, the Bearcats used a 17-5 run, including the last seven points, over the final 7:14 of the first half and took a 38-35 lead into the locker room.
  • The Tartans scored the first six points of the second half and retook the lead 41-38, but eight straight points by the Bearcats gave the lead right back to the home team at 46-41 with 15:22 on the clock.
  • Carnegie Mellon responded by scoring the next six points and took a 47-46 advantage with the clock showing 13:19.
  • Over the next eight minutes, the lead changed hands nine times and was tied on five occasions with neither team leading by more than three points.
  • The Bearcats then took a 68-64 lead with five minutes left in regulation following a layup by Jevontae Jones and a triple by Maxwell Gordon.
  • A pair of free throws by graduate student Nikola Dimitrijevic with 3:12 on the clock knotted the score at 68-all.
  • Four straight foul shots by Saint Vicent, two from Gales and Gordan, and a fastbreak layup by Gales gave the lead back to the Bearcats at 74-68 with 2:06 to play.
  • With the Tartans trailing 76-70 with 1:07 to play after a pair of free throws by Jones, the Cardinal and Gray scored six straight points and tied the score at 76-all with 8.4 seconds remaining on a foul shot by sophomore Ian Brown.
  • Brown's second foul shot hit off the front of the rim and Gales grabbed the rebound for the Bearcats and his outlet pass went to Crosby who scored the game winning fastbreak layup with 2.3 seconds left.

  • The Tartans shot 47.0% (31-55) from the field, 15.0% (3-20) from behind the arc, and 68.8% (11-16) from the free throw line.
  • Dimitrijevic and graduate student Sam Adusei each scored 17 points in the setback to lead the Tartans. Mirazimi finished with 15 points.
  • Graduate student Nolan Casey led all players with 10 rebounds, as the Tartans held a 43-27 advantage on the boards over the Bearcats.
  • Higgs finished the game with a career-high four steals to lead all players and added seven points.

Bearcat Stats

  • The Bearcats shot 52.8% (28-53) from the field, 61.1% (11-18) from behind the arc, and 68.8% (11-16) from the free throw line.
  • Gales led the Bearcats with 20 points while Dev Ostrowski scored 18 and Jones finished with 17.
  • Gordan led all players with eight assists as he also scored nine points.
