Tartans Drop Heartbreaker to Muskingum 75-74

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University Tuesday night. Duane Davis' layup with 2.5 seconds left lifted the Fight Muskies to a 75-74 victory. The Tartans are now 2-1 overall while Muskingum is 1-0.

How it Happened

  • The first half saw the lead change hands six times with the score tied on three occasions.
  • Carnegie Mellon took the largest lead of the half by either team with 4:56 on the clock when senior Buckley DeJardin converted three foul shots which made the score 31-25.
  • The Tartans then took a 38-35 after junior Isaac Higgs pulled up for a jumper in the paint in the closing seconds.
  • With 15:42 left in the contest, the Tartans matched the largest lead of the game at 47-41 on a pair of free throws by graduate student Sam Adusei.
  • Muskingum then used a 9-0 run to take 50-47 lead and it proved to be the first lead change of 13 of the second half.
  • With nine minutes to play the Tartans trailed 61-56 but scored five straight to knot the score at 61-all and later took at 69-68 lead with 3:20 to play off a made bucket by sophomore Evan Mirazimi.
  • The Fighting Muskies then score five straight and led 73-69 as the clock showed 2:01 to play.
  • Back-to-back layups by Mirazimi tied the score with 57 seconds remaining at 73-73.
  • Following a steal by DeJardin with 39 seconds on the clock, Mirazimi was fouled with 11 ticks left. The sophomore went to the foul line and converted the first from the charity stripe, but his second spun around the rim and fell out into the hands of Muskingum's Brett Devault.
  • The Fighting Muskies called a timeout and out of the stoppage, Davis converted a layup with 2.5 seconds left for the victory.

  • The Tartans shot 49.1% from the floor while they converted 6-20 (30.0%) from behind the arc.
  • DeJardin led the Cardinal and Gray with 22 points while Higgs finished with 12 points.
  • Graduate student Nikola Dimitrijevic led the team with eight rebounds.
  • Mirazimi finished with nine points, seven rebounds, a career-best four assists and two steals.

Fight Muskies Stats

  • Muskingum shot 45.8% from the floor and converted 7-17 (41.2%) from long range.
  • Davis led the team with 24 points while Devault had 14 points and Terrell Darden 12.
