#11 Tartans Fall for First Time this Season

(SWARTHMORE, Pa.) - The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, to play 21st-ranked Swarthmore College on Sunday, March 22, for its first match since March 6. Swarthmore rallied for four wins in singles play to upset the Tartans, 4-3.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans started with a 1-0 lead after the first and second doubles teams were successful. Sophomores Kotistha Modak and Victoria Gazda finished second doubles with a 6-1 win before sophomore Ancele Dolensek and senior Divya Venkatarama won at first doubles, 6-3.
  • The Tartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead with victories by Gazda at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-2, and Venkatarama at third singles, 7-5, 6-0.
  • Swarthmore tied the match at 3-3 with wins at sixth, fifth, and first singles and closed the match with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 win at second singles by Erin Li over Modak.

The Tartans will travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to play Johns Hopkins University, Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Mary Washington from Friday, March 27 through Sunday, March 29.
