#13 Tartans Win Twice on the Road

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for two matches on Saturday, March 15. The first defeated 7th-ranked Washington and Lee University by a 4-0 score before topping 30th-ranked UMW, 7-0. The Tartans are now 14-0 for the season.

Washington and Lee Match

  • The Tartans earned the first point of the match after the number one and number three doubles teams were victorious. Senior Zoe Angell and junior Anna Chow finished first doubles with a 7-6 (7-1) score while junior Anika Joshi and freshman Shelly Zinchenko won 7-5 at third doubles.
  • The Tartans started singles well, winning the first set in all but one match.
  • Zinchenko was the first to finish at first singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
  • Freshman Ancele Dolensek then won 6-4, 6-2 at third singles and junior Manuela Van Cotthem won 7-5, 6-2 at sixth singles.
  • The match ended with the remaining singles matches abandoned due to time.

Mary Washington Match

  • CMU won all three doubles matches with the pairs at first and third doubles finishing first to secure the doubles point.
  • Angell and Chow won their eighth match of the year with a 6-2 victory at first doubles.
  • Zinchenko an Joshi won their third straight match with an identical score at third doubles.
  • In singles play, Joshi took care of Evelyn Snyder at sixth singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score while freshman Joycie Lu won at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-0.
  • Match point was won by Van Cotthem at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-1.
  • Zinchenko, Dolensek, and freshman Victoria Gazda were also winners in the match.
