#25 Tartans Season Closes With 68-58 Setback at #17 Johns Hopkins in NCAA Second Round

(BALTIMORE, Md.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team competed in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship Tournament on Saturday night in Baltimore, Maryland against 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins University. The Tartans dropped a hard fought contest 68-58.

How it Happened

  • Hopkins took an early 8-2 lead with 6:40 on the clock, as the lead grew to 16-4 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Three triples by the Tartans to start the second quarter cut the deficit to 16-13 at the 7:11 mark.
  • The Tartans expanded to 13-0 run, as the Tartans took their first lead of the game, 17-16 a minute later.
  • Carnegie Mellon kept the hot hand and opened its lead to 24-18 with 3:45 to play in the half. During the run, the Tartans converted 8-of-11 from the field including all four three-point attempts.
  • After the Cardinal and Gray opened the second quarter on a 20-2 run, they outscored the Blue Jays 24-9 for the frame and led 28-25 at the break.
  • Hopkins scored the first 12 points of the third quarter and led 37-28 at the 6:29 mark with eight of the 12 points coming from the foul line where the Blue Jays converted 8-of-9 over the span.
  • The home team continued with the momentum and took a 50-38 advantage into the fourth quarter.
  • The Tartans pulled to within seven points on three different occasions in the fourth, but that's as close as the visitors got.

  • The Tartans shot 37.1% from the floor while connecting on 6-of-24 for 25.0% from behind the arc and 6-of-6 from the foul line.
  • Senior Catherine Or led the Tartans with 21 points while freshman Payton Baney ended with 10 points.
  • Senior Isha Nambisan had a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Senior Anisha Chintala recorded five assists and had three steals.

Blue Jay Stats

  • The Blue Jays shot 33.9% from the floor while connecting on 4-of-15 for 26.7% from behind the arc and 24-of-31 from the foul line.
  • Macie Feldman led the Johns Hopkins with 17 points while Michaela O'Neil had 12 points and Greta Miller finished with 11 points.

  • This was the first meeting between the institutions since the 2005-06 season.
  • Johns Hopkins leads the all-time series 12-4
  • The Tartans are now 4-4 all-time in NCAA Tournament contests.
