Wang Named UAA Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year; Two Others and Coaching Staff Honored
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Freshmen Joshua Wang of the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team has been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Rookie of the Year, as voted on by the association coaches. Wang, also a first-team selection, is joined by senior David Zhang on the top squad and junior Ryan Dannegger who garnered second team accolades.
The Tartan coaching staff, under the direction of Dan Rodgers along with assistant coach Ty Jones, were named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year. This is the second time on the men's side that Rodgers and his staff have received the honor. The other time following the 2022 season.
The Tartans competed in their seventh straight NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships and ninth appearance in program history this season where they placed eighth.
Wang becomes the seventh Tartan to garner UAA Rookie of the Year honors and fourth straight. The freshman led the Tartans with a scoring average of 71.3 over 31 rounds played. Wang recorded his collegiate-best round of four-under par 68 at the Wabash Invitational. Wang has been the individual medalist on two occasions. In the fall, he won the Gate City Invitational along with the Tartan Invitational. Wang recorded 23 rounds of even par or better this season. He is also a finalist for the NCAA Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award, which recognizes the top players at the Division I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA levels.
Zhang was third on the team with a scoring average of 72.6 over 31 rounds played. The senior recorded a season-best round of four-under par on two occasions this season. The first was a 68 in the fall at the at the Wabash Invitational where he placed third individually in a field of 96 golfers and the second was during the spring where he shot a 67 at the Sam Snead Collegiate where he earned his first collegiate individual medalist honor in a field of 108 golfers. He recorded 17 rounds of even par or better this season.
Dannegger ended the season with the second-best scoring average on the Tartans with a 72.1 and also competed in 31 rounds. He carded four-under on two occasions this season for his season-low round. The first was at The Savannah Invitational and the other was at the Jekyll Island Collegiate. Dannegger recorded 18 rounds of even par or better this season.
