Chan Named UAA Men’s Golfer of the Year and Vieira Named UAA Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Senior Justin Chan along with freshman Leonardo Vieira of the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team have been recognized by University Athletic Association (UAA) as Golfer of the Year and Rookie of the Year, as voted on by the association coaches. Chan along with junior David Zhang also landed a spot on the first team.

The Tartans are currently competing in the third round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship in Penfield, New York. It is the eighth appearance by the Tartans at the championship event and sixth straight.

Ranked third via Scoreboard powered by Clippd heading into play at the NCAAs, Chan recorded his first collegiate individual medalist honor at the Golfweek October Classic and has recorded five other top-five finishes this season. The senior from Surrey, England has come away with top-five results in four of his five spring tournaments and enters the NCAA Championship with a team-leading 71.1 scoring average through 23 rounds. Chan is a four-time PING All-Region V honoree and two-time PING All-American, including First Team in 2024. He has recorded 17 rounds of even par or better this season.

Vieira becomes the sixth Tartan to garner UAA Rookie of the Year honors and third straight as Ryan Dannegger was honored a year ago and David Zhang the year prior. He currently averages 74.1 through 23 rounds played. He had a season-low round of three-under par 68 during round two of the Gate City Invitational.

Zhang has competed in all 23 rounds for the Tartans and has a scoring average of 72.8, which ranks second on the team. He carded three-under on two occasions this season for his season-low round. The first was at the Gate City in the fall and the other was this spring at the Capitol City Classic. Zhang has recorded 15 rounds of even par or better this season.
