Three Named All-America Scholars; Team Earns 13th Straight Academic Honor

(NORMAN, Okla.) – Three members of the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team, Senior Brian Xu, junior Justin Chan and David Zhang have been named Division III All-America Scholars as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for their play on the course and in the classroom. This marks Xu's third straight honor while it is the first for Chan and Zhang.

To be eligible for Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically. In addition, they must participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 79.0 in NCAA Division III and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

The 2023-24 Tartans were also honored as a team for their academics. The Cardinal and Gray were one of 43 NCAA Division III institutions who received the All-Academic Team award from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The Tartans finished the year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.70, as it marked the 13th straight season the team has received the accolade. The Cardinal and Gray were also one of 13 Division III teams to have a cumulative grade point average on 3.5 or higher.

Harvard (Division I), Maryville (Division II), Kenyon (Division III), Virginia Union (HBCU), Keiser (NAIA), Western Texas (NJCAA Division I) and Southwestern (IA) (NJCAA Division II) were all named Academic National Champions for finishing with the top GPA in their respective divisions, announced by the GCAA. Harvard posted the highest overall team GPA for all divisions with a 3.86.

To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors, a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year. The team combined GPAs of 3.00 or higher earn All-Academic Team recognition.
