#2 UChicago Holds Off Tartans, 70-62

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team dropped a 70-62 decision at home to second-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday, January 18. The Tartans are now 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Maroons move to 13-1 and 3-0.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans shot 44.8% from the field in a back-and-forth first half that saw three lead changes and eight ties.
  • The Tartans held a 28-25 lead with 3:42 to go in the half after a tip-in by graduate student Nolan Casey.
  • A 9-0 run by UChicago put them up 34-28 with 1:02 to go before graduate student Nikola Dimitrijevic converted a layup to end the scoring for the half.
  • A 9-0 run by the Tartans during a two-minute span pulled them back to within four points, 59-55, with 3:14 to go after UChicago methodically built a 13-point advantage from the 12-minute mark to 5:40 to play after the game was tied at 43-all.
  • After senior Buckley DeJardin's three-pointer that made it 59-55, UChicago built back the lead to nine points with five straight from Shane Regan.
  • The Tartans were held off, only cutting the deficit to four on an offensive rebound and layup by Dimitrijevic with 36 seconds to play before the final buzzer sounded with the Maroon victory, 70-62.

  • Dimitrijevic led with his second career double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds.
  • DeJardin finished with 18 points while graduate student Sam Adusei had 12 points and eight rebounds.
