Tartans Win Savannah Invitational Breaking Program Record for Lowest 36-Hole Score; Wong Claims Individual Medalist Honors for Second Time

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's golf team carded rounds of 278 (-14) and 282 (-10) at the 36-hole Savannah Invitational on Tuesday hosted by Berry College. The Cardinal and Gray ended the event with a program record team score of 24-under par 560 to win the 19-team event.

How it Happened:

  • Sophomore Emma Wong carded rounds of four-under par 69 and three-under par 70 to lead the Tartans with a seven-under par 139 to claim her second individual medalist honor of the season.
  • Junior Samantha Wang and sophomore Cecilia Jia each entered the clubhouse with back-to-back rounds of three-under par 70 for a 36-hole score of six-under par 140 and tied for second individually in a field of 99 golfers
  • Placing fourth individually was freshman Alyssa Lim with a two-round score of five-under par 141. She opened play with a collegiate low round of four-under par 69 and the fired a one-under par 72 on Tuesday.
  • Junior Nikita Jadhav ended with an even par 146 (70-76). Her opening round of three-under par 70 was a collegiate best round.

'B' Team at Invitational:

  • The Tartans 'B' team carded a 36-hole score of 596 (301-295) and placed fourth.
  • Sophomore Caroline Fixter and freshman Jacqueline Zang ended with a 36-hole score of two-over par 148. Fixter opened play with a collegiate low score of one-under par 72 and the carded a 76 while Zang carded rounds of 75 and even par 73.
  • Senior Wenna Zhang and freshman Claudia Zhang both finished with a 150.

Notes:

  • The NCAA doesn't track the record for the lowest 36-hole tournament score, but the Tatans 24-under par over the invitational is said to be among the top performances in NCAA Division III history.
  • The Tartans opening round score of 14-under par is a school record for the lowest round in program history while their second-round score of 10-under par is the second lowest.
  • Wong now has three career induvial medalist honors.
  • Wong's 36-hole score of seven-under par is for the lowest 36-hole score in program history.
  • Wang and Jia now are tied for the second lowest 36-hole score in program history.
