Tartans Drop UAA Opener, 63-48, to Case Western Reserve

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a home game against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, January 10. The Spartans took home the victory by a 63-48 score to move the Tartans record to 8-4 and 0-1 while the Spartans move to 8-4 and 1-0.

How it Happened

  • The Spartans opened the game with a layup by Maura Schorr and never relinquished the lead.
  • The Tartans pulled to 7-6 on a driving layup by freshman Aleena Dinker with 3:24 to go in the period but the Spartans scored the next 12 points to lead 19-6 at the first break.
  • The Spartans, who average 8.5 three-pointers a game but shoot it just 28.4%, were 4-of-9 in the first half, making two in each quarter, to lead by 15 at halftime.
  • The Tartans have only trailed at the half in three games this season and are now 1-3 after trailing by 15 points in the UAA opener.
  • The Spartans pushed their lead to as many as 20 points in the third quarter and kept a double-digit lead throughout, making 7-of-10 free throws in the fourth frame.
  • The Tartans made just two three-pointers in the game, with one coming from half court by Dinker to end the first half.

  • The Tartans shot 37% (20-54) from the field, 10.5% (2-19) from behind the arc and 54.5% (6-11) from the free throw line.
  • Dinker led the offense with 12 points, followed by sophomore Payton Baney with 11.
  • Senior Nicole Timko led the defense with six rebounds, followed by senior Savannah Gibbs with five.
  • Dinker and senior Ava Arias both had two assists.

Spartan Stats

  • The Spartans shot 39.6% (21-53) from the field, 41.2% (7-17) from behind the arc, and 70% (14-20) from the free throw line.
  • Mya Hartjes finished with 21 points, making 3-of-5 from long range.
  • Emily Plachta scored 14 and Jordyn Call finished with 10 points.
  • Plachta had 12 rebounds while Schorr grabbed 10 boards.
