Tartans Top St. Francis in Exhibition Game

(LORETTO, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to Loretto, Pennsylvania, for a morning game against St. Francis University on Tuesday, November 18 and defeated the Red Flash, 55-53, in an exhibition contest.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans had their best shooting performance of the season, hitting a season-best 22 shots from the field for a season-best percentage of 41.5%.
  • After leading by three points after the first period, the Tartans led by one, 32-31, at the half.
  • Neither team led by more than three points in the period with the Tartans taking the last lead on a layup by senior Savannah Gibbs with 2:37 left ahead of a jumper by freshman Shelby Lewis with two minutes to go that made it 17-14.
  • A 7-2 run by the Red Flash gave them a 21-19 lead four minutes in the second period. It was a lead they would hold until sophomore Anya Peper hit a three-pointer with 2:48 left to make it 25-23.
  • There were two ties and two lead changes the rest of the way in the second period with the Red Flash scoring last with nine second left to make it 32-31.
  • The Tartans led through the third quarter and pushed the advange to 10 points on a layup by Gibbs in just under seven minutes to play.
  • A 10-0 run by the Red Flash over a two minute and 33 second span tied the game at 51-all and led to a Tartan timeout.
  • Another layup by Gibbs gave the Tartans the lead but the Red Flash tied it again with 45 seconds to go.
  • A jumper by sophomore Payton Baney off a pass from freshman Niyati Bangalore was the winning basket with 13 seconds on the clock.

  • Baney led with 12 points and Gibbs finished with 11.
  • Lewis recorded 10 points
  • Gibbs led with six rebounds.
  • Bangalore led with four assists.

Red Flash Stats

  • Sonia Sato scored 24 points.
  • Aleah James had 12 points and seven steals.

The Tartans will travel to Marietta, Ohio, for the Jim Meagle Classic at Marietta College on Friday, November 21 and Saturday, November 22. They'll face Cortland on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
