Tartans Erase Deficit to Defeat Emory in Overtime

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team erased a 19-point deficit to Emory University to defeat the visiting Eagles in overtime, 78-66, on Friday, February 7 at the midway point of the University Athletic Association (UAA) season. The Tartans are now 15-4 and 5-3 while the Eagles are 12-7 and 4-4 leaving the Tartans in sole position of second place in the UAA.

How it Happened

  • Emory held a 28-14 lead after the first quarter thanks to shooting 55.0% from the floor while the Tartans hit just 4-of-12 shots and turned the ball over five times.
  • A 13-2 run for the Tartans to end the second quarter pulled the home squad to within eight points when senior Anisha Chintala scored a second-chance layup to make the score 43-35.
  • Senior Isha Nambisan scored seven of her 15 first half points in the second quarter to lead the Tartans at the break.
  • Emory connected on 9-of-18 three-point attempts in the half aiding them in their eight-point lead.
  • The Tartans methodically pulled the game back and trailed by two late in the third quarter after freshman Payton Baney scored a layup off a dish from Nambisan.
  • The Eagles hit their 10th three-pointer of the game to end the quarter with a five-point advantage.
  • The first lead for the Tartans came with 6:47 to play on a driving layup by Chintala. Baney scored on the next possession to give the Tartans their largest lead in regulation at three points.
  • Emory led once again off a three-pointer by Daniella Aronsky but Baney answered with a turnaround jump shot and the Tartans either led or the game was tied for the last 4:19 of the regulation with Mary Mullinax hitting a jumper for the final tie of 63-all.
  • It was all Tartans in overtime, as Baney scored the first basket after her steal and layup. After Emory tied it with a layup, the Tartans ran off 11 straight points with Emory turning the ball over twice and missing two shots.
  • Nambisan's three-pointer from the corner made it 68-65 to start the run.
  • All five players who started overtime for the Tartans scored and played the full five minutes in the frame.

Tartan Stats

  • Nambisan finished with a career-high tying 23 points after making 5-of-11 from long range and all four of her free throw attempts. She also had a career-best six assists.
  • Baney also recorded a career-high with 18 points and tied career highs of eight rebounds and five steals. She finished the game perfect from the field shooting 9-of-9.
  • Chintala scored 12 points and had four assists while senior Catherine Or tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Eagle Stats

  • Aronsky led the team with 15 points and six assists.
  • Mullinax finished with 13 points while Alexandra Loucopoulos scored 12.
  • The Eagles finished with 12 made three-pointers after hitting nine in the first half.

Notes

  • It was the fourth win of the season for the Tartans after trailing at halftime, and first one out of two at home.
  • The Tartans stopped a 13-game losing streak against the Eagles with the win, the first since 2017.
  • That was the fourth overtime game in the series and the Tartans hold a 3-1 advantage in those games.
