#23 Tartans Drop Road Game at #24 UChicago

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to compete against the 24th-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, January 17. The Tartans lost to the Maroons 62-54, bringing them to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Maroons are also 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Scoring two three-pointers in the first two minutes of the game, the Maroons took the early lead 6-0.
  • A series of plays including a three-pointer from senior Catherine Or and a layup by junior Savannah Gibbs, tied things up 7-7.
  • Junior Savannah Gibbs led the Tartans for the remainder of the first quarter, scoring a hook shot, two free throws, and two layups, putting the Tartans in the lead 17-13.
  • The second quarter was relatively low scoring: the Tartans totaled eight points including another three-pointer from Or. The Maroons totaled 12 points, tying things up 25-25.
  • The Maroons built an eight-point lead in the third quarter, scoring six of 12 points from the free-throw line.
  • With 3:03 remaining, freshman Payton Baney scored a three-pointer while a minute later, Or scored her third three-pointer of the game to pull the Tartans within one-point, 39-38.
  • After a layup by the Maroons, the quarter ended with a layup from junior Nicole Timko, bringing the score to 41-40 in the Maroon's favor.
  • The game was neck and neck in the fourth quarter with four lead changes over the first 2:50. Five minutes later, Or tied the game at 50-50 with 2:31 remaining with a pull up jump shot.
  • A 7-0 run by the Maroons put the home squad ahead for good, as they closed the game making 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans shot 34.6% (18-52) from the floor and converted 4-of-17 from behind the arc for 23.5%.
  • Or led the Tartans, scoring 19 points. She also had a team-high of six rebounds.
  • Gibbs had 14 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor. She also had five rebounds and a team-high of four assists.

Maroon Stats

  • The Maroons shot 39.2% (20-51) from the floor and converted 5-of-16 from behind the arc for 31.3%.
  • Kate Gross led the Maroons with 19 points and seven rebounds. 
  • Sophia North had 10 points and seven rebounds.
