(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team hosted Case Western Reserve University for a doubleheader to close the season on Saturday, May 9 at Shady Side Academy. The Spartans took game one, 7-1, before rallying for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to close game two with a 5-4 win. The Tartans finish the year with a 20-18 record and 6-12 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA).
Inside Game 1
- The Tartans were held to three hits and scored their only run in the fourth inning.
- Case Western Reserve scored once in the second, twice in the third, once in the fourth, and added three runs in the fifth inning.
- Freshman Riya Sharda collected the first hit for the Tartans in the third inning.
- Freshman Sophia Doherty walked with one out in the fourth inning and after freshman Michelle Pacheco entered to pinch run, sophomore Gabrielle Yamoah tripled to left center for the RBI.
Inside Game 2
- Senior Haley Pucci pitched the full game after pitching the first four innings of game one. She gave up nine hits, with three coming in the final inning for the Spartans.
- After the Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, senior Kira Monji singled through the left side to start the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored when the catcher had a throwing error to second.
- The Tartans took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the fifth inning.
- Junior Maya Bala singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a single through the right side by Sharda.
- The Spartans made a pitching change after freshman Aubrey Feldman singled to left field to load the bases. After Monji reached on a fielder's choice that recorded the second out at the plate, freshman Maddie Lee singled to left to score a run. Junior Lindsey Murai followed with a two-run single.
- Karen Potts led off the seventh with a home run and Elizabeth Berry singled in Ashley Miller from second to tie the game. Sierra Ejercito pinch ran for Berry and scored on a double down the left field line by Sophia Becker to record the eventual winning run.
