Tartans Begin Three-Game Series at #6 WashU with 6-3 Loss
(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team began a three-game series against 6th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, April 24. The Bears pulled through and beat the Tartans 6-3. This puts the Tartans at 20-13 overall and 6-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Bears are now 23-3-1 overall and 11-2 in the conference.
Inside the Results
- Junior Maddy Beall doubled to left field to start the game but was stranded at third following a wild pitch when the next three batters struck out.
- The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the first after stealing four bases in the inning and recording two hits.
- The Tartans loaded the bases in the top of the second inning when junior Lindsey Murai led off with a single and two others walked with one out. All three were left on base.
- Senior pitcher Haley Pucci gave up one hit in the bottom of the second but struck out two batters to keep a scoreless inning.
- The Tartans had another hit in the top of the third but couldn't score and the Bears added a run in the bottom half of the inning to lead 4-0.
- Carnegie Mellon again left runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings before scoring three runs in the top of the sixth.
- Freshman Maddie Lee's single up the middle allowed freshman Kiera Thomas and sophomore Gabrielle Yamoah to run home while she advanced to third on the throw to the plate.
- Lee then scored when Beall hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
- The Bears scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and secured the win with three straight outs in the top of the seventh.
- Pucci finished with seven strikeouts.
