Tartans Split Play in Doubleheader with Brandeis

(NEW CASTLE, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team competed in a doubleheader against Brandeis University on Saturday, April 11. The Judges dominated the first game with a 5-0 win, while the Tartans won the second game, 2-1. This puts the Tartans at 15-12 overall and 3-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges are at 18-11 overall and 5-4 in the UAA.

Inside Game 1

  • The Tartans began the game with two hits in the bottom of the first with singles by senior Kira Monji and junior Maddy Beall but they were stranded resulting in no runs.
  • The Judges put the first run on the board in the top of the third with a double to the fence that scored a runner from first.
  • Jordan Wallace, who doubled in the run in the third inning for the Judges, hit a two-run homer in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. Bells Burdenski then homered for a 4-0 advantage.
  • After the Judges added a run in the top of the seventh inning, the Tartans earned their first hit of the game since the first inning when freshman Kiera Thomas recorded a pinch hit single to start off the seventh. After a flyout by junior Lindsay Murai, freshman Bella Reuss lined into a double play to end the game.
  • Senior pitcher Haley Pucci faced 23 batters and freshman pitcher Mari Jarmoszka faced 12.

Inside Game 2

  • The Tartans put their only runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Madison Heimann singled sophomore Gabrielle Yamoah and Beall. Yamoah singled with one out, stole second, and later advanced to third on a ground out by sophomore Reagan Diamond. Beall reached on walk.
  • The Tartans continued to hit the ball but stranded 11 runners on base from innings three through six.
  • The Judges cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Sophomore Gabriella Triano allowed one hit and one walk through the first two innings before being forced out of the game at the start of the third with a hand injury. Thomas pitched five solid innings, scattering four hits with one run against and four strikeouts for the win and is now 6-3 for the season. 
  • Yamoah, Beall and Heimann each had two hits in the game.

The Tartans will compete in a doubleheader at La Roche University on Wednesday, April 15. The first game will begin at 3:00 p.m.
