Tartans Drop Eight-Inning Game at UChicago

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team fell to the University of Chicago on Friday, April 3 in the first game of the three-game series. The Maroons rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings to drop the Tartans' record to 13-9 and 1-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while they moved to 8-11 and 1-3.

Inside the Game

  • The Tartans left two runners on base in the first inning but took a 1-0 lead in the second when junior Lindsey Murai singled in junior Maya Bala who reached on a double to start the inning.
  • Freshman Madison Heimann recorded a pinch hit double with two outs in the sixth inning and came around to score when senior Kira Monji was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Chicago scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth with a bases loaded single but the Tartans ended the defensive inning when freshman Riya Sharda threw home from right field for sophomore catcher Reagan Diamond to throw out the runner rounding third.
  • Chicago tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly, pushing the game to extra innings.
  • Bala led off the eighth with a single and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder. After freshman Audrey Felman walked, Bala scored on a sacrifice fly by Murai.
  • Chicago hit two solo home runs in the eighth to take the victory.

Up Next

The Tartans and Maroons started game two, however it was suspended due to darkness in the top of the sixth inning with UChicago leading 5-4. The game will resume on Saturday, April 4.
