Tartans Sweep Marietta in Pair of Five-Inning Games

(MARIETTA, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team dominated in their doubleheader against Marietta College on Sunday, March 22 with a pair of five-inning victories, by scores of 16-6 and 15-5. The Tartans are now 12-6 for the season while Marietta dropped to 9-7.

Inside Game One

  • The Tartans opened the game with one run off two hits in the top of the first with senior Kira Monji scoring on a double by sophomore Reagan Diamond.
  • Marietta answered with two runs in the bottom of the first off three hits.
  • The Tartans then scored four more runs in the top of the second with the first run coming after sophomore Gabrielle Yamoah singled through the left side, causing junior Lindsay Murai to advance to third and freshman Kiera Thomas to score.
  • Murai then scored after freshman Aubrey Feldman hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
  • Monji doubled and freshman Maddie Lee was hit by a pitch before Diamond singled them in for a 5-2 lead.
  • The Pioneers picked up a run in the bottom of the second before the Tartans added two more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the third with Feldman recording two RBIs with a single up the middle.
  • Six runs off six hits in the top of the fourth put the Tartans up 13-3. Diamond, Yamoah, Feldman and Monji each had an RBI while freshman Bella Reuss hit her first career home run to knock in two.
  • Marietta earned three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a score of 13-6.
  • Thomas added two RBIs with a double in the top of the fifth inning with junior Lindsey Murai collecting an infield hit with and RBI to lead 16-6.
  • Sophomore Gabriella Triano entered in the fifth inning to pitch for sophomore Gianna Adams and retired the side to close out the game and help Adams earn her seventh win of the season.

Inside Game Two

  • The Tartans scored in the first, second, third, and fifth innings.
  • Diamond and freshman Sophia Doherty collected RBI singles in the first inning but the lead was short-lived as the Pioneers knocked in four runs off three hits in the bottom of the inning to lead 4-2.
  • The Tartans then collected six runs off four hits in the top of the second for an 8-4 lead.
  • Yamoah scored on a bases loaded walk to Lee and Diamond followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice. Junior Maddy Beall then singled up the middle to score a run, Reuss doubled in two runs, and Murai recorded a sacrifice fly.
  • The hits continued for the Tartans in the third inning with Lee earning an RBI single after Feldman and Monji both reached on singles to start the inning.
  • Diamond continued her day of hits and RBIs with a home run to center field.
  • After a scoreless inning for the Tartans in the fourth, Marietta pushed one run across the plate after a fielding error by the Tartans.
  • The last runs of the game came off the bat of Reuss who homered for the second time on the day.
  • Triano earned the win with two innings of relief work.

The Tartans will begin University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m. with the first of a three-game series at 23rd-ranked Emory University (13-8).
