Timely Hitting and Pitching Lead Tartans to Win at #14 Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team opened its final series of the year with a 6-4 win at 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Thursday, May 8. The Tartans are now 15-19 overall and 7-9 in the University Athletic Association while the Spartans are 26-10 and 11-5.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when the second batter singled through the right side to score the leadoff hitter who walked and then stole second.
  • The Tartans took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning.
  • Senior Abbey Reese doubled to center field to leadoff the second, advanced to third on a out by senior Allie Rome, and scored on an error. Senior Libby Eichberger then grounded out but plated sophomore Maddy Beall.
  • After CWRU tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, the Tartans scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.
  • Reese again led off the inning with a hit and scored on a single by Rome. Senior Kira Monji singled up the middle to score Beall who walked and graduate student Kiera Boucher laid down a bunt and reached on a throwing error that scored two runs with two outs.
  • Junior Haley Pucci faced four batters in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with the Spartans stranding a runner each time.
  • In the seventh inning, Pucci got two outs before the Spartans scored twice and then recorded the final out with the bases loaded to earn her fourth win of the season. She struck out four batters for the game.
