Tartans Drop Two Against #11 WashU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played the last two games of a three-game series against 11th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, April 26. The Bears came out on top 6-3 in the first game and 8-2 in the second game. This puts the Tartans at 14-19 overall and 6-9 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Bears are at 29-5 overall and 14-1 in the UAA.

Game 1

  • The Bears took the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first on two hits and sacrifice fly.
  • In the bottom of the second, senior Abbey Reese scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Koko Sagae
  • The Tartans tied things up 2-2 in the bottom of the third when graduate student Kiera Boucher scored from second on a throwing error when the second baseman tried to double her off third following a sacrifice bunt by senior Emma Martin.
  • The Bears took back control, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth after stringing together five hits.
  • Senior Faith Lawrence ran home on a single from sophomore Jasmine Chao with two outs in the bottom of the sixth before Sagae flied out to ending the inning.
  • Three ground outs by the Tartans in the seventh ended the game with WashU's Jamie Burgasser earning her 12th win of the season.
  • Freshman Gianna Adams pitched all seven innings for the Tartans and recorded four strikeouts.

Game 2

  • The Tartans started off the scoring in the bottom of the second when senior Allie Rome laid down a squeeze bunt to score Reese who started the inning with an infield single.
  • In the top of the third, the Bears took the lead, recording four runs off two hits against junior Haley Pucci.
  • The Tartans put two runners on in the fifth but couldn't capitalize, leaving the Bears with a 4-1 lead going into the sixth.
  • Another four hits by the Bears in the sixth led to four more runs and an 8-1 advantage.
  • The first three batters for the Tartans in the seventh inning reached safely with sophomore Maddy Beall leading off with an infield single, Rome walking, and Sagae hitting a single to right field. After a fielder's choice got an out at the plate, Boucher singled up the middle to score Rome but Sagae was thrown out at the dish for the second out.
  • Pucci pitched all seven innings for the Tartans and recorded one strikeout.

The Tartans will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, for a three-game series against 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University (23-9, 10-4). Competition will begin on Thursday, May 8 at 4:30 p.m.
