Tartans Split Doubleheader at Geneva

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played a non-conference doubleheader against Geneva College on Wednesday, April 16. The Tartans won the first game 6-1 in eight innings and lost the second 11-3 in six innings, making the Tartans 12-15 for the season while the Golden Tornadoes move to 19-10.

Game 1

  • After an extremely quiet game, consisting of only five hits in seven innings for the Tartans, the team struck lightning at the top of the eighth.
  • The inning started with sophomore Maddy Beall being placed on second base, graduate student Kiera Boucher hit a single, allowing Beall to advance to third and then successfully stole second.
  • Both Boucher and Beall scored after senior Libby Eichberger reached first on an error by the leftfielder.
  • Eichberger then scored from second after freshman Reagan Diamond hit a double down the left field sideline.
  • Senior Abby Reese and freshman Gabbie Boone added two more runs to the score after Faith Lawrence homered to right field.
  • The bottom of the eighth started with a 6-0 Tartan advantage. The Golden Tornadoes ended freshman Gianna Adams' shutout with a single with two outs. However, Adams closed the game with a groundout to shortstop for her sixth victory of the season.
  • Adams finished the game with nine strikeouts while scattering seven hits.

Game 2

  • The Tartans scored first in the top of the first with Boucher scoring off Lawrence's groundout to second.
  • The Golden Tornadoes came out swinging in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on four hits.
  • Three more runs were scored by Geneva in the bottom of the second, making the score 8-1.
  • The Tartans then scored on back-to-back hits in the top of the third. Boucher led off with a double and scored off a double down the left field line by Lawrence. Lawrence then scored on a single up the middle by Diamond.
  • Geneva answered with a run in the third and later scored a run apiece in the fifth and sixth to end the game.
  • Reese and freshman Gabriella Triano also hit safely in the game.
