(TIFFIN, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled to Tiffin, Ohio, to compete at the Dragon Open hosted by Tiffin University on Saturday, February 14.
Senior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) extended his win streak in an event to five meets, winning the 800-meter run for the fourth time. This time he bettered his previous University Athletic Assocation (UAA) leading time and crossed in 1:53.70. Junior Thomas Mayo-Smith (Rye, N.Y./Rye) placed third in the event in 2:02.99.
The 3,000-meter run was swept by the Tartans, as sophomore Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) won the event in 8:50.40. Senior Joe Pane (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was next in 8:53.90 with junior Brian Bollens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) in third in 8:58.04.
In the mile, senior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) placed second in 4:25.38, leading three other Tartans who crossed third, fourth and fifth. Freshman Ryan Auld (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) followed Degen in 4:27.86.
The Tartans 4x400-meter relay placed second in 3:33.44 with a second team finishing fourth in 3:40.37.
Freshman Jeff Chen (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) placed seventh in the 200-meter dash in 23.42 while freshman Dylan Clarke (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) placed eighth in the 400-meter dash in 53.63.
In the triple jump, freshman Shane Conton (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) placed third with a mark of 12.69 meters as freshman Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) was fourth with a mark of 12.14 meters. In the long jump, freshman Andrew Lee (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) placed seventh with a leap of 5.87 meters.
Freshman David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) placed sixth in the shot put, throwing the element 14.89 meters which now leads the UAA.
The Tartans will next compete on Friday, February 20 at Ohio State University.
