UAA Battle at ITA Indoor Championship Sees Emory Top Tartans, 6-3

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team faced off with University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Emory University on Saturday, February 20 in the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The Tartans, ranked 11th nationally, are now 5-3 on the season while the Eagles, ranked fifth, move to 3-2.

Freshmen Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) and Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose) earned the first point of the match when they won 8-5 at first doubles against Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding. The Eagles tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-5 win at third doubles before sophomore Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and junior Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won 9-7 at second doubles to give the Tartans a 2-1 lead going into singles play.

Emory won at third, first, fourth and fifth singles to record the match victory.

The third win for the Tartans came from freshman Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) at sixth singles. He won 6-2, 2-6, 10-2.

The Tartans will now face 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, February 21 at 9:00 a.m. in the third-place match.
