Tartans Doubles and Singles Run at ITA Southeast Regional Ends in Championship Match

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - Senior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and junior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) along with junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) all participated in a championship match at the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional on Monday, September 29 at the University of Mary Washington.

Beisswanger and Kumar started the day with an 8-4 victory over Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson of the University of Mary Washington in the doubles semifinals, setting a match-up with Ermerson Walsh and Mike Buxbaum of Johns Hopkins University for the championship.

The pair took the first set, 6-3, from Walsh and Buxbaum as Yuvraj served for the set. Hopkins answered with a 6-3 second set win to force the third and final set. After an epic battle that went to a tiebreaker, the duo from Johns Hopkins won out 7-6 (8-6).

Alla, a number two seed for the singles tournament, won his semifinals match against fourth-seeded Ben Hwang of Johns Hopkins University 6-2, 6-2 to start his day.

After a short rain delay, the championship match was moved indoors as Alla faced off with the number one seed Mike Buxbaum of Johns Hopkins to defend his 2013 title. Alla took a 5-2 lead in the first set but Buxbaum found his serve and came back to win 7-6 (7-0). Alla rallied and forced a third set by winning the second 6-2.

In a very high level match, Buxbaum was able to take a 5-3 lead and went on to win 6-4 to take the crown.
