Tartans Defeat Grove City and Rochester in Tri-Meet
(GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team traveled to Grove City College to swim against the Wolverines and the University of Rochester, leaving with two victories. The Tartans won eight individual events for the day and topped Grove City 227-64 and Rochester 195-83.
In diving, sophomore Ioannis Michailidis (Athens, Greece/Hellenic American) finished third on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards registering 145.70 and 141.05 points, respectively.
The Tartans opened the meet with a first-place showing in the 200-yard medley relay, winning in 1:35.85 behind junior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), junior Cole Um (Federal Way, Wash./Bellarmine Prep), freshman Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) and went on to sweep four events for the meet.
The Tartans swept the 1,000-yard freestyle with junior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) winning in 9:58.40. Freshman Dustin Ferzacca (Beverly, Mass./Manchester Essex) was second in 10:18.49 as freshman Bora Sebuktekin (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was third in 10:31.97.
In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) led a sweep, finishing in 1:45.56 as sophomore Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was second in 1:45.59 and sophomore Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) was third in 1:46.12.
The third sweep of the meet came in the 200-yard butterfly with junior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) winning in 1:56.65. Walsh finished second in 1:57.01 with freshman Mark Smith (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) taking third in 1:59.66.
The Tartans' final sweep of the afternoon came in the 100-yard butterfly as sophomore Alex Dintino (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) led in 52.24. Freshman Evan Li (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) was second in 52.75 and senior Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) was third in 52.79.
Sears won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.64 and the 100-yard freestyle in 48.46. Also taking a victory was Geier in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:57.54 and Walsh in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.09.
Dintino finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.99 with junior Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) taking third in 54.31.
Another second-place showing came from Li in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.04 with junior Roy Sung (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) in third in 1:00.58, as Nielsen finished second in the 200-yard IM in 2:00.01.
The Tartans closed the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.34.
The Tartans will next swim in a home tri-meet with Allegheny College and Washington & Lee University on Saturday, November 16 at 11:30 a.m.
