Tartans Push #7 MIT to Five, Fall in Final Set by Two
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team began the Carnegie Mellon Quad sponsored by DoubleTree Downtown on Friday, September 12 with a game against 7th-ranked MIT. The Engineers took the win 3-2 after a thrilling and close five-set match. This puts the Tartans at 7-2 overall and the Engineers at 7-0.
Inside the Box Score
- The Engineers took an early lead, winning the first and second sets 25-23 and 25-22. The Tartans tied things up, winning the third and fourth sets 25-21 and 25-20. The Engineers won the final set 16-14.
- The Tartans hit .227 and the Engineers hit .182.
- Junior Kate Giang led the team offensively, knocking down 18 kills. Senior Katherine Jackson had 13 kills and senior Bella Woodard had 12 kills.
- Giang also had three service aces.
- Junior Neha Tummala had a team-high of 42 assists. She also had one sevice ace and led the team with 24 digs.
- Junior Zoe Gavros collected 22 digs.
- Senior Julianna McFarland led at the net with 12 block assists.
Notes
- McFarland's 12 block assists is the most in NCAA Division III this year and the most for a Tartan since Eliza Donohue had nine on September 23, 2016 against Randolph-Macon.
- The match was the first between the two schools while Gavros faced off against her older sister, Daphne, a senior at MIT who led the Engineers with 28 digs.
