(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) action at Emory University with two matches on Sunday, October 6. The Tartans defeated the Case Western Reserve University, 3-2, before dropping a 3-1 contest to 3rd-ranked University of Chicago. The Tartans are now 15-4 overall and 3-2 in UAA play.
In the match with the Spartans, Carnegie Mellon was down 2-1 before winning set four 25-11 and then the final set, 15-10, for the win. The Tartans hit just .036 in the fifth set but put down eight kills while CWRU hit -.053 with two kills.
Leading the Tartans was junior Diana Balta (Media, Pa. / Penncrest) with a career-tying and season-high 14 kills. She had a double-double with another career-best of 20 digs, which was also a season-best. Sophomore Vivian Beaudoin (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills) collected 13 kills with both senior Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla. / Archbishop McCarthy) and sophomore Anna Cao (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) picking up nine kills apiece.
Senior Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif. / Sacred Heart Cathedral) had 31 assists while fresman Stella Yan (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) had 24 assists against the Spartans. So-Holloway had a season-best five service aces and led the Tartans who had 14 service aces for the match. Senior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif. / Sacred Heart Cathedral) led with 27 digs while Aqui had four block assists.
Against the Maroons, the Tartans won set two 25-23 but were outdone in sets one, three, and four by scores of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-20. Senior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa. / Parkland) hit .320 with 11 kills to lead the Tartans while Cao had 10 kills. Yew had a season-best 34 digs while So-Holloway had 23 assists with Yan tallying 12 assists and 16 digs.
The season continues on Sunday, October 20 at Case Western Reserve when the Tartans face New York University and Washington University in the final regular season UAA matches.
