Freshman Martin Plays for ITA Regional Singles Championship
(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis freshman Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) played for the ITA Southeast Regional Singles Championship on Monday, September 24. The freshman was seeded ninth in the tournament and advanced to the championship match before falling in a tightly contested match to Meghan Buell of Washington & Lee University.
Martin advanced to the championship with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Shannon Herndon of Johns Hopkins University in the semifinals. The championship match saw Martin drop the first set after a tiebreaker 7-6(7-2) before Buell finished the match with a 6-4 win in the second set.
Fellow Tartan Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) was also in the semifinals of the singles tournament but was taken down by Buell in a three-set match 7-6(7-2), 3-6, 6-1.
