Women’s Tennis Starts Year with Invite

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened its 2012-13 year with its annual tennis invite with Duquesne University, Slippery Rock University and California University of Pa. Freshman Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) highlighted the Tartans with a 4-0 combined mark in singles and doubles play.

Most of the matches played were pro-sets to 8 with a few played as regular sets to 6.  Tsu started with an 8-3 victory over Janelle Krantz of Slippery Rock before topping Jade Pondicas of California 8-1.  In doubles play, Tsu teamed with sophomore Lydia Utkin (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) in doubles to win a pair of matches as well.  They first took down Krantz and Kasey Love of Slippery Rock 8-5 before winning a 6-3 match over Laurence Lambert and Alrissa Tobe of Duquesne.  

Also in her first collegiate debut, freshman Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) won two singles matches.  Hamstra defeated Krantz 8-4 and then won 8-5 over Tobb.  The freshman paired with junior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) in doubles as the tandem went 1-1.  Their win was a 6-2 decision over Sarah Shashura and Chandler Consonery of Duquesne.

Sophomore Jana Motie (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) paired with freshman Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) to defeat Alexa Miller and Paula Gruber of Duquesne 8-5.  Martin also topped Miller in singles play 8-2.

Carnegie Mellon returns to action the weekend of Saturday, September 22nd when they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. for the ITA Regional Tournament at the University of Mary Washington.
