Tartans Finish UAA Championships, Xu Wins 200 Back

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team competed in the fourth and final day of competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Saturday, February 15 at Emory University. The Tartans placed fifth out of eight teams with a total of 897 points.

Top Performances

  • Junior Savannah Xu won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.43, which is eighth in the nation and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships.
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Shaffer finished sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a career-best time of 2:19.97.
  • Freshman Natalia Evans-Gibson finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly, earning a time of 2:03.44. Junior Sophie Elliott and junior Audrey Soetanto led the B-final in ninth and 10th place with times of 2:04.00 and 2:04.21.
  • Freshman Alexandra Scharpf placed seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 17:28.90. Freshman Angelina Sanna splaced tenth with a time of 17:36.85.
  • Sophomore Anna Zaniolo was the top finisher for the Tartans in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.20 for 18th place.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Xu, junior Grace Malinger, Elliott, and Zaniolo finished in a time of 3:30.46, placing sixth.

Notes

  • Xu earned her third career UAA Championship with her top finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Her other two came during her first season, as she won both IM events.

The swimmers will compete in the Kenyon Fast Chance meet on Saturday, February 22 while the divers have a week off before competing in the NCAA Region 4 Diving Championships on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1.
