Phan Leads Tartans who Win Four at UAA Invite

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team opened the season with four wins, behind three individual victories by junior Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) at the University Athletic Association Invite hosted by the University of Rochester. The Tartans finished ahead of Rochester as well as Brandeis University, Case Western Reserve University and New York University.

The Tartans picked up victories in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, and 400-yard IM.

In the 200-yard medley relay, freshman Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), freshman Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), Phan and senior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) touched in 1:50.50. Phan then won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.38 with freshman Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) finishing second in 2:00.48. Later in the meet, Phan won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.41 and the 400-yard IM in 4:40.03..

Singhaus won the 100-yard backstroke by three seconds touching the wall in 1:00.43 and later finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.76, .38 seconds off the victory.

Wang finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.98 with junior Tatiana Duchak (Centreville, Va./Mercersburg Academy) finishing fourth in 1:10.76. Junior Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) touched third in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:16.50 with sophomore Wendy Liu (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finishing fourth in 2:17.26.

Stillo picked up a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.28 while senior Price Kinney (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:33.88 and sophomore Kaeli Halbersleben (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.01.

Also finishing third for the Tartans was Suzuka in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.77. Garvey touched just after her in 1:01.97.

Freshman Alicia Iott (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) scored for the Tartans in diving when she finished ninth on the one-meter board with 134.20 points.

The Tartans will return home to face Clarion University on Saturday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m.
