Tartans Start 2012 with 61-54 Victory at Allegheny
(MEADEVILLE, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team began 2012 with a victory over Allegheny College, 61-54, on the road Tuesday night. With the win, the Tartans even their record at 5-5 and drop the Gators to 8-4.
Three players scored in double figures for the Tartans who came from behind in the first half to take a one-point lead at the break, 20-19. The Gators were ahead 7-2 before freshman Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) surrounded a three-pointer by Allegheny with a jumper and a trey to pull the Tartans within three at 10-7, six minutes into the game.
A three-minute scoring drought by both teams was ended with a layin by sophomore Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant). With the Gators holding a 18-12 advantage, the Tartans scored eight straight over the last three minutes to take a 20-18 lead behind four points by junior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central). Senior Jennifer Larsen (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) hit two free throws to give the Tartans 20 points and their first lead of the game.
Carnegie Mellon started the second period with a 10-0 run with four points apiece coming from Peel and Shaw and never let the Gators get closer than four points the rest of the game.
Peel finished the game with a game-high 19 points after dropping in 13 during the second period. Shaw followed with 16 points as Larsen scored 12. Peel also led the team with 12 rebounds, recording her fourth double-double of the season, and tied a season-high with four blocks. Despite an off shooting night, freshman Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) picked up four assists and five rebounds in the win.
Allegheny was led by Heidi Goeller's 16 points and Daryl Ford's 13 points and 17 rebounds.
The Tartans shot 41.1% for the game, 46.9% in the second half, and held the Gators to 26.9% shooting for the game.
Carnegie Mellon will take its .500 record into conference play on Saturday, January 7, when they travel to Case Western Reserve University (7-4) for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
