Get to Know: Mike McDermott
Mike McDermott is a junior biomedical engineering and materials science major from Seekonk, Mass. He is a seven-time All-UAA honoree, earning the UAA Championship in the high jump during the 2013 outdoor season.
1. Favorite CMU XC/T&F moment to this point in your career?
Winning the 2013 Indoor UAA Track & Field Championship despite severe food poisoning that ran through several members of the team including myself.
2. What internships and with which company have you had while at CMU and what did you do?
While at CMU I have worked for the Rhode Island Burn Center developing a complex data sheet for more efficient resuscitation of burn victims (2012). I currently work for the Bone Tissue Engineering Center developing polymer mediated therapeutics for the prevention of Heterotopic Ossification and the Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva pathology (2013-current).
3. If you could meet any Cross Country/Track & Field Athlete, who would it be?
I would love to meet Ashton Eaton, the most recent Olympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder in the Decathlon
4. Most influential person in your life?
My mom has always been there for me in my life to pick me up when I was down, to keep me grounded when I was up, and to push me even when I didn't want to be pushed. I wouldn't be anything without her.
5. Favorite Place to eat on Campus and favorite food?
Wing Night at the Tartan Pavilion with my teammates, followed by a steam and hot tub session in the UC.
6. Funniest Teammate?
David Markowitz. Even on your worst day he can make you laugh.
7. The main reason I came to Carnegie Mellon University was...
It is a beautiful campus that blends an urban environment with a big city feel. Walking around you truly feel like you are among the brightest, most hard working people in the world every single day. It can't help but make you a better person.
8. Favorite Book or TV Show?
My favorite TV Show is Cheers with Ted Danson (who went to CMU) and my favorite character is Norm.
