Short Qualifies for Finals in Mile, Freimanis Starts Heptathlon at NCAA Championships
(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) – Junior Matthew Short and sophomore Luke Freimanis of the Carnegie Mellon University men's indoor track and field team competed at the first day of the 2026 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships of Friday. The championships are being held at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
NCAA Performances
- Short ran in the preliminaries of the mile run and posted a times of 4:12.41 to advance to the finals on Saturday. He placed fifth in his heat and ran the fifth best time among the two heats.
- Following the first day of the heptathlon, where four events took place, Freimanis is in 19th place with 2,531 points.
- Freimanis ran a time of 7.23 in the 60-meter run, recorded a mark of 6.32 meters in the long jump, cleared the bar at 1.77 meters in the high jump and tossed the element 9.74 meters in the shot put.

The championship continues on Saturday, March 14 with Freimanis starting off in the 60-meter hurdles of the heptathlon at 11:00 a.m. with the Short competing in the finals of the mile run at 5:10 p.m.
