Freimanis Wins Heptathlon at Bucknell; Tartans Open Season at YSU and Mount Union

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's indoor track and field team opened its 2025-2026 season competing at three different meets over the weekend. On Friday, December 5, some Tartans traveled to Youngstown, Ohio, for the YSU Icebreaker. On Saturday, some Tartans also traveled to the University of Mount Union for the Toy Drive Invite and two athletes traveled to Bucknell University for the Bison Open on Friday and Saturday to compete in the heptathlon.

Top Performances at Bucknell

  • Sophomore Luke Freimanis finished first overall in the heptathlon with a total of 5,019 points.
  • Freimanis also finished first in three of the seven events. He placed first in the long jump with a mark of 6.99 meters, first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.44 and first in the pole vault, clearing 4.35 meters. He was third in the high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters and third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.19.

Top Performances at Youngstown

  • Junior Matthew Yu was the first tartan to cross the line in both the 60-meter dash finishing eighth with a time of 7.07, and the 200-meter dash, finishing 16th with a time of 22.59.
  • Freshman Eric de Oliveira ran the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.61 in 10th place, putting him fourth all-time in the indoor 400 in his first ever collegiate race.
  • Teammates junior Jeremy Ocloo and freshman Aryan Hiray finished close behind. Ocloo ran a 49.98 to claim 14th place, and Hiray finished 18th with a time of 50.50.
  • Sophomore Jon Okorie finished ninth in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.15, a personal record for him. Senior Saaketh Nandakumar and junior Connor Reidy finished in 11th and 15th, respectively, with times of 1:58.26 and 2:00.1.
  • In the mile, freshman Stefan Langridge finished 15th with a time of 4:26.93, and sophomore Veyd Patil finished 16th with a time of 4:28.65.
  • On the field side, senior Christian Duckworth vaulted 4.45 meters to place 10th in the seeded men's pole vault.
  • In the unseeded pole vault, sophomore Lucas Knappenberger vaulted 4.1 meters to place seventh.
  • Senior Morgan Johnson won the men's long jump with a mark of 7.02., putting him fourth on the Carnegie Mellon all-time list.
  • In the men's triple jump, junior Atai Tahasan placed seventh, jumping 13.83 meters, and Johnson placed ninth, jumping 13.6 meters.

Top Performances at Mount Union

  • In the 400-meter dash, junior Philip Ma placed tenth with a time of 53.61, sophomore James Brewer was 13th with a time of 54.69.
  • Freshman Yusuf Shabazz was 16th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.86. Shabazz was also sixth in the long jump with a mark of 6.17 meters.
  • In weight throw, senior Johnathan Crawshaw threw 11.91 meters to place 12th, senior Victor Crawshaw threw 11.57 meters to place 15th. Freshman Mohammad Ahmed was 17th, throwing 10.6 meters.
  • Johnathan Crawshaw was third in the shot put, throwing 15.18 meters. Ahmed was seventh, throwing 13.79 meters.

On Saturday, January 24th, the Tartans will travel to John Carroll University to compete in the Leo Miller/Hayden Snow Meet of Champions.
