Tartans Lead After First Day of UAAs
(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team began competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships at the Icahn Stadium in New York on Saturday, April 26. After day one, the Tartans are in first place of seven teams with 73 points.
Top Performances on the Track
- Senior Matthew Porter won the 10,000-meter run, finishing in a time of 30:46.85. Senior Matthew Coyle was runner-up with a time of 31:03.43, repeating his same finish from a year ago.
- Graduate student Anthony Toskin won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:24.36. Junior Kenji Tella placed second with a personal record time of 9:28.18. Freshman Nicolo Fasanelli was fourth with a personal record time of 9:30.31.
- The team of graduate student Matthew Denton, senior Aleksei Seletskiy, senior Sean Dutton, and sophomore Matthew Short completed the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 7:48.28, earning second place.
Finals Qualifiers
- Freshman Kurt Schimmel qualified fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best of 15.20.
- Sophomore Philip Ma qualified fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.44.
- Junior Bennett Wong and sophomore Matthew Yu qualified sixth and seventh in the 200-meter dash in times of 22.04 and 22.07, respectively. Yu's time was a personal best.
Top Performances in the Field
- Senior Nathaniel Deyak finished third in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.06 meters.
- Junior Johnathan Crawshaw landed in second place in the shot put with a mark of 14.84 meters. Junior Victor Crawshaw placed seventh with a mark of 12.66 meters.
- With a second-place finish, sophomore Solomon Glavach tied Christian Duckworth's 2024 pole vault school record with a mark of 4.88 meters.
