Six Tartans to Compete at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team had six athletes earn selection to the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 23-25 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This marks the fifth straight outdoor championships that the Tartans will have three or more athletes competing.

Senior Thomas Rich will compete in the decathlon for the third straight season after becoming the first Tartan two seasons ago to qualify in the decathlon. Last season, Rich placed ninth at the championships after he finished 13th the year prior in the decathlon. He earned selection to the meet with a school record score of 6,823 set at the Susquehanna Multi Meet and ranks third in the nation.

Senior Andrew McGovern will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. This will mark his third time competing in the event at he national meet, as he earned All-America honors after placing sixth at the 2021 championships. He currently has the 21st fastest time entering the race at 53.02.

Making their first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships are graduate student Matthew Porter, junior Matthew Coyle, sophomore Christian Duckworth and freshman Derek Armfield. Porter and Coyle will compete in the 10,000-meter run. Earlier this season, Coyle set the school record with a time of 29:47.14 at the Bison Outdoor Classic and at the same meet Porter crossed in 29:52.80 for his top time this season. Duckworth will be competing in the pole vault and ranks 19th with a school record height of 4.88 meters established at the Carnegie Mellon Invite. Armfield will throw the javelin at the championships as he also qualified with a school record mark of 60.09 meters set this week at the All-Atlantic Regional.

The first event at the championships is the men's 100-meter dash of the decathlon and set to start at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.
