Tartans Set Pool Records at Home Western PA Invitational
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team competed at the two-day Western Pennsylvanian Invitational on Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24. The Tartans swept three events over the course of the invitational.
Top Performances
- Freshman Max Gu, freshman Reginald Kanu, junior Shivansh Singhal, and sophomore Matthew Peitler took second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:24.33.
- Junior Brayden Morford won two events, starting with the 200-yard IM in 1:51.28 before winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:05.84 on the second day.
- Freshman Tenmy Wangpo placed first in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:36.94 and in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:52.33 and tied for second in the 200-yard breaststroke with junior Jerry Chu in 2:06.84.
- Freshman Trevan Valena had three top-three finishes with a victory in the 400-yard IM in 4:08.96. He placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:57.35 and third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.25.
- Senior Arnav Deshpande won the 100-yard backstroke in 50.38.
- Sophomore Matvey Malinovski was second in the 200-yard IM in 1:57.20 while freshman Noah Barret was third in 1:57.87.
- Junior Jacob Quan won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:19.73 and was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.04.
- Junior Aaron Lee was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.39 with junior Daniel Baytin touching third in 55.46. Lee also placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in 50.74.
- Peitler placed second in the 100-yard freestyle in 44.99.
- Senior Todd Achuff was second in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.34 while freshman Giulio Migliarina was second in the 400-yard IM in 4:10.55.
- Junior Ljubomir Popovic was third in the 100-yard backstroke while Baytin was third in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.43.
- The 400-yard freestyle relay of Peitler, freshman Charles Hu, freshman Otis Tsai, and Morford set a pool record of 3:02.89 while Peitler set the 100-yard freestyle pool record with a leadoff split of 44.28.
