Tartans Win Five Events in Dual with Denison

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team began the second semester with a dual meet at home against Denison University, on Saturday, January 17 following its week long training trip to Florida. The Big Red won the meet by a 205-92 score.

Top Performances

  • Opening Relay: The 200-yard medley relay placed second with a time of 1:28.26 from senior Arnav Deshpande, junior Aaron Lee, junior Brayden Morford, and freshman Noah Barrett.
  • Junior Cole Venters placed fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:55.96.
  • In the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events, freshman Max Gu placed fifth with times of 23.96 and 47.21, respectively.
  • Morford finished first in the 100-yard backstroke in 48.54 seconds, one of two athletes to swim under 50 seconds. He once again finished first in the 100-yard butterfly swimming a time of 49.10.
  • Senior Max Kulbida placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.93. In the 200-yard breaststroke, he finished fifth with a time of 2:10.84.
  • Freshman Tenmy Wangpo won both the 200-yard butterfly in 1:49.35 and the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:53.61. He later finished third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.85.
  • Gu finished just behind Wangpo in the 200-yard IM with a time of 26.19.
  • Deshpande finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.39.
  • Junior Jacob Quan finished fifth in 4:45.79 in the 500-yard freestyle.
  • The Tartans finished off the meet winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:22.99 from Morford, Barrett, sophomore Todd Dong, and Deshpande.
  • Junior Nico Shuster led the Tartan divers with a third-place finish on the 1-meter board with a score of 280.2 and a second-place finish on the 3-meter with a point total of 323.62.

Westminster Diving Invite

  • Shuster finished fifth on the 1-meter board scoring 230.95. He also finished fifth in the 3-meter board with a score of 230.45.
