Tartans Cruise Past Washington & Lee in First Dual Meet of the Season

(LEXINGTON, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team continued its season at Washington and Lee University on Saturday, October 18. The Tartans scored a total of 191 points against 71 for the Generals, sweeping five events.

Inside the Results

  • The first event of the day was the 200-yard medley relay with senior Arnav Deshpande, junior Brayden Morford, freshman Giulio Migliarina, and sophomore Matthew Peitler taking first place with a time of 1:31.18, scoring 11 points.
  • The Tartans swept in the 1,000-yard freestyle with junior Jacob Quan placing first with a time of 9:57.68, followed by junior Miles Haraldsson in second with a time of 9:59.35 and freshman Trevan Valena taking third with a time of 10:08.30.
  • Junior Cole Venters finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.95.
  • The 100-yard backstroke was also swept by the Tartans with first place taken by sophomore Matvey Malinovski with a time of 51.24. Freshman Otis Tsai placed second with a time of 51.43 and freshman Max Gu took third with a time of 52.14.
  • Morford won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.92 and junior Andy Lu took third place with a time of 58.66.
  • The Tartans swept a third event in the meet, with freshman Tenmy Wangpo, Migliarina, and junior Austin Lathrop taking first, second, and third, respectively in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 1:49.96, 1:55.06, and 1:56.23.
  • Freshman Noah Barrett and Deshpande took second and third in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 21.51 and 21.60.
  • Peitler took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45:33.
  • The Tartans swept again in the 200-yard backstroke with Wangpo, Tsai, and senior David Zoota placing first, second, third with times of 1:53.68, 1:55.63, and 1:59.50.
  • Lu took first place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.61.
  • Quan, Venters, and freshman Andrew Chen swept the 500-yard freestyle with times of 4:47.52, 4:48.06, and 4:49.03.
  • Morford took first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.91.
  • Gu won the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:53.83.
  • The 200-yard freestyle relay was deep with Tartans, as Carnegie Mellon took first, second and third in the event. The winning relay was made up of Morford, Peitler, Barret, and Deshpande with a time of 1:23.37.
